Meeko
2/18/2015
I rescued Meeko August, 28th 2012. He was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen, but also very scared. Any time he was touched, he would hiss and curl his body into a ball with his quills pointing in every direction. I was determined to get this adorable animal to open up to me, but I had no idea what I had gotten myself into.
Hedgehogs are very high maintenance animals. And as I learned his needs, he learned to trust me. Eventually, Meeko and I grew very close. I cuddled him daily and took him outside to explore any time it was warm enough. He was there for me through a lot. When I left an abusive relationship, when I moved away from my hometown, when my father passed. I was known as “hedgehog girl,” and proudly wore hedgehog t-shirts and answered any questions people had about hedgehogs. Meeko became more than a pet to me.
Meeko lived to the ripe old age of 4, but he could have very well been older considering that he was a rescue. He grew into a very sweet hedgehog, who was full of love and curiosity. He could never turn down a snack, his favorite being shrimp. He ran all night, and cuddled all day. His nose was always in the air, sniffing out his next adventure. And when his little body couldn’t take anymore, he passed doing his favorite thing, napping with me.
When I lost Meeko, I lost my baby. I lost my best friend, my confidant, my cuddle buddy, my roommate and so much more. It feels like a piece of me is missing.
I love you Meeko. You will always have a very special place in my heart.
